Gramlok is a culturally-rooted social media platform built specifically for India, designed to connect and empower communities across rural, suburban, and urban areas. It seamlessly integrates with the Indian socio-administrative structure and is available in 17 Indian languages, making it highly accessible. Gramlok’s core mission is guided by three visions: reconnecting with village roots, amplifying rural voices to the national stage, and delivering essential services to India’s rural heartland.

The platform is free and open to everyone. Users can register using an email or phone number, verified through an OTP system. Once verified, a user can become a member of up to five villages, four subdistricts, three districts, and two states. Each official entity (village, subdistrict, district, and state) has its own dedicated page. Users can also apply to become administrators of these entities, though they are limited to managing two entities at most.

Gramlok supports various types of posts that help fulfill its guiding visions:

  1. Activities Posts: These are like personal status updates limited to members of an entity. While only members can post, all verified users can comment. These posts remain within the entity’s page and serve the goal of reconnecting people with their roots.
  2. News Posts: Designed to share important updates that may be relevant beyond a single entity. These can be promoted to higher administrative levels based on popularity—starting from village level and moving up to national level—ensuring rural voices reach a broader audience. This fulfills Gramlok’s second vision.
  3. Buy-Sell Posts: Users can post goods for sale or request to buy within villages, subdistricts, or districts. Posts made at a lower level (e.g., village) cascade upwards to higher levels (e.g., subdistrict, district), facilitating local commerce.
  4. Services Posts: Similar to buy-sell posts but focused on service offerings. These also reach users at appropriate levels of the platform, supporting local economies and partially fulfilling the platform’s third vision.
  5. Event Pages: Members can create pages for festivals, ceremonies, or public events, including details like date, venue, and donation or sponsorship options. Events can be promoted as news posts, helping communities organize and celebrate together.
  6. Entity Profiles: Administrators can enhance their entity’s page with cover photos and detailed descriptions covering cultural, social, and geographical information, local institutions, and notable individuals, including elected Panchayat members.
  7. User Profiles: Each user has a personal profile with a post feed, notification center, and privacy settings. Profiles help users track their activity and connect with others.
  8. Chat Feature: Real-time messaging allows users to communicate directly, fostering interaction and community building.
