EngineRoom VR is a cross-platform maritime training and familiarisation platform developed to help maritime students, seafarers and technical personnel understand and practise engine-room operations in a safe, controlled and repeatable virtual environment.

The platform recreates a realistic ship engine room containing major machinery, systems, pipelines, controls and operational areas. Users can freely explore the environment, inspect machinery, identify components and understand how different systems are connected before entering an actual vessel or engine room.

EngineRoom VR supports guided learning, practical procedures and scenario-based training. Trainees can perform tasks such as machinery identification, equipment preparation, system start-up and shutdown, routine inspections, fault identification, maintenance procedures and emergency response. Each activity can include step-by-step guidance, safety instructions, interactive controls and assessment criteria.

Training institutions can use the platform for:

EngineRoom VR can track trainee performance, including completed steps, skipped procedures, incorrect operations, safety violations, task duration and final assessment scores. Results can be made available to instructors through a tutor interface or integrated with an institution’s learning management system.

Instructors can use the platform to demonstrate machinery, explain system operation, assign training scenarios and review student performance. Custom tasks, machinery procedures and assessments can be developed according to an institution’s syllabus, vessel type or training requirements.

The platform is designed for deployment across:

  • Standalone virtual reality headsets
  • PC-connected virtual reality systems
  • Windows computers
  • Android devices

This cross-platform approach allows institutions to provide immersive VR training where suitable while also giving students access through conventional computers and mobile devices. Training content can therefore be used inside simulation laboratories, classrooms or individual learning environments.

EngineRoom VR reduces dependence on continuous access to operational machinery and physical training facilities. It allows procedures to be repeated without fuel consumption, machinery wear, equipment damage, operational interruption or risk to trainees. Dangerous, rare or costly situations can be simulated safely and restarted whenever required.

The system can also include AI-assisted learning, allowing trainees to ask questions about machinery, procedures, alarms and engine-room systems. Responses can be connected to approved manuals, institutional learning material and custom technical documentation.

EngineRoom VR is modular and can be adapted for different ship types, machinery arrangements, training syllabi and organisational requirements. Institutions may select specific learning modules, add custom procedures, integrate their branding and connect the platform with existing LMS or student-management systems.

The objective of EngineRoom VR is not to replace approved onboard experience or certified full-mission simulators. It is designed to make practical maritime learning more accessible, visual, repeatable and measurable while preparing trainees to use real machinery with greater confidence, awareness and procedural understanding.
